1. Definition of cookies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cookies are small text files which are sent by websites and stored in users\u2019 PCs, smartphones, laptops and tablets to be sent back to the same website during the users\u2019 subsequent visit. Thanks to cookies, websites keep track of users\u2019 actions and preferences (such as for instance login information, language, font size, other display settings etc.) so that users won\u2019t have to select them again on their next visit to the site or when surfing between web pages. Therefore, cookies are used for IT authentication, session monitoring and storage of information on website users\u2019 activities and may also contain a unique identification code to keep track of a user\u2019s surfing activities for statistical or advertising purposes. While browsing, a user may receive on his\/her computer cookies of other sites or web servers (third-party cookies). Such third parties have own personal data processing policies and privacy notices which are available on their respective sites, to which reference shall be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some cases, cookies are technically required for a site to function, as some operations may not be performed without them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are different types of cookies, depending on their characteristics and functions, which are stored in users\u2019 PCs, smartphones or tablets for different lengths of time: session cookies are automatically erased when the browser closes, whereas persistent cookies are written to disk until their expiration date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Italian legislation does not always require users to express their consent to the use of cookies; in particular, no consent is necessary to install technical cookies, i.e. cookies used for the sole purpose of sending an email message or providing a service expressly requested by the user; in other words, these cookies are essential for the operation of websites or necessary to carry out activities requested by a user.
